The story behind the art, by: Pete Marsh
I attended this Chris Cornell gig just a short time after seeing Soundgarden at Download Festival. My wife bought the ticket as a surprise birthday present for me! It was a great gig…just one man and a guitar (well, quite a few guitars actually!). There was a real intimacy about the concert and Chris Cornell just captivated the audience in the theatre that night. I wanted to express something of this man alone, except for his guitars, on stage, but totally mesmerizing. I felt he was alone, but at the same time totally “with” his audience and the audience whilst passively sat in their (our) theatre seats were also completely connected with Chris. I don’t know whether that makes sense…but this is often a feeling I get at a gig…where the artist is on stage, worshiped and adored, exuding their stage persona, the audience physically and geographically disconnected, but at the same time “together” enjoying a reciprocal spiritual empathy with the artist. When it is a solo show this feeling is often amplified…but with this gig there was a palpable “connect” and a relaxed warmth permeated the show. Even though I was aware of his work, this gig made me realize just what an incredible talent Chris Cornell was. I’d enjoyed his work with Soundgarden and Audioslave, but seeing him solo really highlighted his true genius.

“Dark as roses and fine as sand
Feel your healing and your sting again
Hear you laughing and my soul is saved
On forgotten graves you cry.
Crawl like ivy up my spine
Through my nerves and into my eyes
Cuts like anguish or recollections
Of better days gone by
But it’s all right
When you’re all in pain
And you feel the rain come down
Oh it’s all right
When you find your way
Then you see it disappear
Oh it’s all right
Though your garden’s gray
I know all your graces
Someday will flower
In a sweet sunshower
Eyes like oceans so far away
A feather trail to a better way
Worried mornings turn into days
Then into worried nights
But it’s all right
When you’re all in pain
And you feel the rain come down
Oh it’s all right
When you find your way
Then you see it disappear
It’s all right
Though your garden’s gray
I know all your graces
Someday will flower
Oh in a sweet sunshower
In the sweet sunshower
In the sweet
Sweet
Sweet
Sunshower
I know all your graces
Someday will flower
In the sweet
In the sweet sunshower
And its all right
All you’ll be you are today
Are today.” ~ Chris Cornell, ‘Sunshower’
