For the word in human form, look no further than P!NK — an artist who embodies “voice” to the fullest. Whether she is speaking her mind on stage or in song form, P!NK consistently leads by example in the category of being who you are and being proud of it. Her latest release, Beautiful Trauma is perhaps her strongest statement yet.
A record filled with honesty, strength, and all variations of voice, Beautiful Trauma is a beautiful example… of P!NK leveraging her platform to use her voice. It is not always an easy road throughout the 13 song journey. There are plenty of moments of vulnerability, just as there’s always been in P!NK’s catalog of voice — from “Split Personality” to “Just Like a Pill” to the closing curtains on “You Get My Love” (which is also the last four words you hear on the new record), the consistent foundation is that through both her melodic bellows and written words, P!NK speaks her mind. She lays all her emotions out in an — “afraid I am not” approach that tackles her demons on the forefront, while at the same time shows gratitude for both the pleasure and the pain. The thing about fear is — everyone has it, and those who are most courageous, get irritated at the point of being called “fearless” because the fact is, fear is everywhere, they just chose to take it on.
Enter Beautiful Trauma. Extracting 10 stunning lyrics was no easy task in a record full of truths. What I noticed was, the lyrics that move mountains come in all shapes and sizes — some in just 11 words, and some in the form of an entire song.
“Whatever You Want”
I feel like our ship’s going down tonight
But it’s always darkest before the light
And that’s enough for me to try
“But We Lost It”
I’m still the girl that you chased all around the world
I haven’t changed, just replaced all the chains with pearls
“Beautiful Trauma”
You punched a hole in the wall and I framed it
“Where We Go”
There’s a road that takes me home
Take me fast or take me slow
Throw my head out the window
Feel the wind, make me whole
Write my name up in the sky
As we contemplate goodbye
I don’t know, we don’t know, where we go
“Secrets”
I’ve got some things to say
’Cause there’s a lot that you don’t know
It’s written on my face, it’s gonna be hard to swallow
“What About Us”
We are searchlights, we can see in the dark
We are rockets, pointed up at the stars
We are billions of beautiful hearts
We are problems that want to be solved
We are children that need to be loved
We were willin’, we came when you called
Sticks and stones, they may break these bones
But then I’ll be ready, are you ready?
It’s the start of us, waking up come on
Are you ready? I’ll be ready
I don’t want control, I want to let go
Are you ready? I’ll be ready
’Cause now it’s time to let them know
We are ready, what about us?
“I Am Here”
May the light be upon me
May I feel in my bones that I am enough
I can make anywhere home
My fingers are clenched, my stomach’s in knots
My heart it is racing, but afraid I am not
Afraid I am not
“You Get My Love”
The light comes in, the dawn is rising down
You opened up your eyes
Once again I have to risk it all
The time is now
If there’s only one thing about me that you can trust
You get my love
“Revenge” (featuring Eminem)
The whole damn song
“Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken”
I fight because I have to
I fight for us to know the truth
There’s not enough rope to tie me down
There’s not enough tape to shut this mouth
The stones you throw can make me bleed
But I won’t stop until we’re free
My spirit above me
You cannot deny me
My freedom is burning
This broken world keeps turning
I’ll never surrender
There’s nothing, but a victory
